WRHS Concussion Management Plan - Updated Spring 2026

We are updating our concussion management plan to include the latest research and safety plans, ensuring our students, athletes, and staff receive the highest standard of care and a safe return to school and activity.

Why the Update?

  • Evidence-Based Plan: Following the latest international consensus statements on brain health as recommended by the latest Concussion Consensus Statement.

  • Safety First: Prioritizing long-term recovery over short-term participation.

  • Clearer Pathways: Streamlining the "Return to Play" and "Return to Learn" steps to remove guesswork for families and staff.

Key Changes:

  • We are moving away from neurocognitive testing (ImPACT testing)

    • Research shows that physical symptoms and daily task performance are more reliable indicators of health than a digital score.

    • Concussions aren't just about "testing." They require a hands-on assessment by a qualified healthcare provider.

  • We will be requiring the IHSSA Return to Sport Medical Release form for students evaluated by their provider when returning to activity.
